Advanced Labrador Breeding

Reachign For The Stars
Excellant view of breeding in England. If you are considering becoming a breeder this will make you look at some hard choices you may have to make about keeping your own stock down to a manageable number.

A great read, the author is obviously an expert in her field and an entertaining writer too.

If your looking for genetics info it isn't here, this book is written from an older pre-genetic perspective.

A "Must Have" for the serious dog fancier.
If you could only have one book to guide you as a serious breeder and/or canine judge, this would be it! All the knowledge, experience and wisdom is contained in this one book and all you have to do is absorb it. Don't be put off by her Laborador Retriever background, the information pertains to all breeds. I only wish I had read this book 10 years ago.

A facinating read and highly informative
Learing about the five stages of the development of a dog breeder and exhibiter was mind boggling. Mary Roslin Williams is an excellent story teller and her knowledge cuts across all breeds. With the added information bringing the book up-to-date and adding famous dogs and breeders from around the world has made this book even more valuable.

Change of Heart
I took this book out of the library because I do costuming, but I didn't think it would be that good- now I want my own copy. Even though it contains theatre oriented advice on making realistic looking armor without breaking your budget, aging fabric, padding out your actors properly, etc., it also contains basic helpful advice for anyone who sews about the fabrics you use, how to solve problems when things don't fit right, picking the right sized dart, and more. I definitely recommend it.

a must for all costume shops!
After being in a small costume shop for five years, i wish i had discovered this sooner! This book gives realistic solutions for common problems!

The Costume Designer's Handbook : A Complete Guide for Amateur and Professional Costume Designers

Having trouble designing? well this book
will be a huge help. She teaches you how to break down a play and how to form plots. I have had the honor of working with Rosemary Angham at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, on two productions : Taiming the Shrew and King Lear. She was an amazing designer to watch and learn from. Everything that she says in her books is truly what she does. this is an amaing book, but there are not a lot of pictures. But the text information makes up for that lack.

Excellent overview of process
This is a great resource for the design process. I especially use these guidelines for analysis of a play and characters whenever I design a show. A must have for anyone interested in designing shows!!

When Martha's Away, Lionel Will Play
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (Juv) (October, 1995)
Authors: Bruce Ingman and Bruce Ingham
Average review score:

Look Out, Pet Owners!
This week our preschool class read "When Martha's Away, Lionel Will Play" by Bruce Ingman.

What a funny book! The main character, Lionel, tells the story. We figured that out and then had to laugh when we realized that Lionel was a cat.

You can imagine that having a cat tell the story begins a pretty silly book. Lionel tells his owner, Martha, about all the things he does while she's away at school.

Among other things, Lionel calls his relatives on the telephone to catch up, reads a newspaper he has delivered specially to him so he can know about the goings-on in the cat world, and makes himself a nice meal to eat in front of the television.

As if those situations weren't amusing enough, the illustrations are hilarious. We laughed out loud at Lionel's adventures.

Perhaps the best part about this story is that it's a fast read that generates a lot of discussion. We all tried to picture what our own pets might do when we are not home. Mrs. Graham said that if her dog, Max, was making long distance phone calls while she was at work he'd have to go get a job to pay the bills.

We recommend this book, which is as funny for adults as it is for kids. One note, however: parents may end up feeling a bit old during the reading of this one. In the telephone scene, Lionel is talking on a sturdy-looking black phone with a short curly cord and a rotary dial. The children asked Mrs. Graham to explain why his phone looked so strange and big. Just remember, moms and dads, this is the cell phone generation!

In short, do read it and do enjoy it. But don't leave it where your own cat can peruse it and get any bright ideas...

A classic for every child's bedside
Warmth and humor are welcome from the effortless Mr. Ingman. This book is the rare combination of wonderful illustrations and writing. Martha, a cat, has full days while her master is at school; phone calls, visitors and even a miastro performance at the piano for the neighborhood cats. A kid should be so lucky as to have this book near their bed. It belongs right inbetween, "Goodnight Moon," and, "Free Lunch."

Good and faithful servant : the unauthorized biography of Bernard Ingham
Published in Unknown Binding by Faber and Faber ()
Author: Robert Harris
Average review score:

A Very British Spin Doctor
Sir Bernard Ingham was Thatcher's press secretary throughout her 11 years at Downing Street; in that time he was roundly feared and respected by bureaucrats, members of Parliament and journalists alike. This book tells the remarkable story of how a starry-eyed 1950s Labour Party, bred in the best traditions of North country socialism, evolved, after a long career as a government press officer, into the Iron Lady's chief spin doctor. Ingham is still around in British media, and assumes rather a benign presence as a member of the British punditocarcy, espousing an old fashioned Yorkshire sensibility.

This is the one!!!
This review is very simple. If you're looking at this page, BUY THIS BOOK!!! I am a steel historian and I've had this book for about 7 years. I refer to it at least 2-3 times per month. Even if you're just curious about Carnegie, Frick, Schwab or the other personalities, this is the book for you. If you're interested in the business building aspects, this is the book for you. If you're interested in history at all, buy this book. Without a doubt this is the best book on the Carnegie Steel Company. If you read any book about the steel industry, make sure this is the one.

Making Iron and Steel : Independent Mills in Pittsburgh, 182
I was born in Pittsburgh during the 50's. Steel was King everyone in your family work at the mills. By the time I graduated from high school (74) the steel mills were shuting down and being destroyed. This book has the greatest number of human interest pictures and stories I have ever read about Pittsburgh's Steel area. This book not only coveres the large miles located in the downtown area but also brings to life the number of small towns who whole survivial was built around the mills. The era that is covered is before safety was a major concern. You can see in the pictures and the well written stories that these imagrants came together in dangerous and hard work situations to produce the greatest product of its time STEEL. When the Steel died so did much of Pittsburgh. This book shows the world how you lived and died the Pittsburgh steel way...beautifully.

Shenanigan
Published in Paperback by Windsor House Publishing Group, Inc (15 September, 1998)
Authors: Charles Reilly and Donna Ingham
Average review score:

Saga of Vietnam War and its Aftermath
This book is for anyone interested in the Vietnam War and particularly the US Army Rangers. The story concerns two New Englanders who wind up in the same company but become involved in their own private feud while battling the NVA enemy. The battle scenes are realistic and very graphic and it gives the reader an insight into how this brutal war was fought from the perspective of the average infantryman. The second part of the book is about what happened to the two main characters as they live and relive these experiences many years later. I recommend this book for anyone who seeks to find out the motivation of our soldiers when in battle and how they are able to cope with all of it in later life. This book was certainly an eye-opener for me and I'm sure for others who have read it.

Moving and Compelling
I've just reread this book for the second time. It's a favorite on my shelf. Each time I have found in it a new insight on the humanity that struggles within all of us, buried under our hopes, insecurities and fears. Reilly has truly written of the incredible experiences of two men intertwined by one of the greatest tragedies of human life of our times -- a cathartic literary experience one hopes for him and a delightful, riveting read for us. There were times when I laughed out loud and others when I felt moved with a great compassion. I can't wait to see what he has in store for us next. Bring it on Reilly!

Realistic, characters and storyline. Very sad too.
Charles Reilly's characters,Gavinand O'Connor, are so real it seems like someone you grew up with.
